Why one wired drop still beats a better router
Most people try to fix a slow room by buying a bigger router. Sometimes that works. Often the room just needed a wire.

There is a room in most houses that everybody complains about. The back bedroom that turned into an office. The garage. The upstairs corner where the video calls freeze up right when somebody asks you a question. The usual response is to go and buy a better router, and when that does not fix it, to buy a mesh system, and when that does not fully fix it either, to accept that the room is just bad.
Sometimes the router really was the problem. But quite often the room did not need more wireless. It needed one cable.
Wi-Fi is shared, and that is the whole story
A wireless access point is one conversation that everybody in range has to take turns in. Your laptop talks, then the television talks, then a phone in somebody's pocket wakes up and checks something, then the doorbell camera uploads a clip. They are all polite about it, but they are all waiting on each other, and the more devices you add the more waiting there is.
On top of that, the signal has to physically get to you. Interior walls take a bite out of it. So does the foil backing on some insulation, ductwork, a fridge, a fish tank, and anything with a large metal surface. By the time the signal reaches the far bedroom it may still show three bars while actually running at a fraction of what it manages in the hallway.
A wired drop has none of those problems. It is one cable, going to one device, carrying that device's traffic and nothing else. Nothing else is competing for it and no wall is in the way. That is not a marketing claim about a product, it is just what a dedicated physical path does.
The rooms where it actually matters
Not every room needs to be wired, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling cable. These are the ones where a drop reliably changes how the room feels to use:
- The room somebody works from. Video calls are the least forgiving thing most households do with their internet, because a stall is immediately visible to other people.
- Wherever the main television lives. Streaming at a high bitrate is a sustained load, and it is the first thing to degrade when the wireless gets busy.
- A home office with a desktop machine, a printer and a network drive that all talk to each other rather than to the internet.
- Anywhere you would put an access point. Access points work far better fed by a cable than by relaying wirelessly back to the router.
- In a business, every desk with a phone on it, because voice is unforgiving about jitter in a way that email is not.
What running a drop actually involves
The job is less dramatic than people expect. A run leaves a central point, usually a small enclosure or a rack where the internet service comes in and a switch lives. It travels through a wall cavity, an attic or a ceiling to the room you want it in. It gets terminated on a jack in a wall plate at that end and landed on a patch panel or a block at the other. Then it gets tested, because a cable that is pulled but not properly terminated at both ends is not a drop, it is a piece of cable in a wall.
The part worth paying attention to is what happens at the central end. If the runs are landed in order on a patch field, labeled, and left with a bit of slack, then in three years when you want to move something it is a five minute change. If they are jammed in a bundle with no slack and no labels, the next person has to trace every one of them by hand.
This is not an argument against wireless
Phones, tablets and laptops that move around the house obviously have to be wireless, and modern mesh systems genuinely are better than a single router shoved in a cupboard by the front door. Mesh has become popular for a good reason: it gives you far better coverage across a whole house than one box ever did.
The point is that wireless works much better when it is not being asked to do the jobs a cable should be doing. Take the television, the desktop and the work-from-home setup off the air, feed your access points with wire instead of making them relay to each other, and the wireless that is left has far less to carry. People often describe the result as the Wi-Fi getting faster, when really it just got less crowded.
A reasonable way to decide
Walk the building and note which rooms people complain about, which rooms have something in them that sits still and uses a lot of bandwidth, and where you would want an access point if you were placing them properly. That list is usually short, and it is usually the list of drops worth running.
