Outlets, runs, terminations and patch fields for homes and businesses. Routers, access points and mesh where wireless is the right answer, and point to point wireless when the other end is a different building.

Chapter 01

Getting internet into every corner

We wire homes and businesses for network. From installing outlets and running the cable to terminating the ends and landing them on the outlets, the goal is one thing: internet that reaches the whole building without leaving a spot out.

The part worth caring about is what happens at the central end. Runs landed in order on a patch field, labeled, and left with a bit of slack mean that in three years moving something is a five minute change. Runs jammed into a bundle with no slack and no labels mean the next person traces every one of them by hand.

A drop that has been pulled but not properly terminated at both ends and tested is not a drop. It is a piece of cable in a wall.

Why a hard line still beats better wireless

Wireless is shared. Every device in range takes turns, and the more you add the more waiting there is. The signal also has to physically get to you, and interior walls, ductwork and anything with a large metal surface all take a bite out of it. A room can show full bars and still run at a fraction of what it manages in the hallway.

A drop has neither problem. It is one cable to one device, with nothing competing for it and no wall in the way. Network drops are especially useful for working from home when you need a hard line, and for entertainment, where a wired connection can be faster than wireless and far steadier under load.

The rooms that reliably justify one are short to list: wherever somebody takes video calls, wherever the main television lives, a desk with equipment that talks to other equipment, and anywhere you would want an access point.

Chapter 03

Routers, access points and mesh

Router and access point programming are part of the job, not an afterthought. Mesh systems have become popular for a good reason, because they give far better coverage across a whole house than a single router shoved in a cupboard by the front door ever did.

Wireless works much better when it is not being asked to do the jobs a cable should be doing. Take the television and the work-from-home desk off the air, feed the access points with wire instead of making them relay to each other, and what is left has far less to carry. People usually describe that as the Wi-Fi getting faster. It mostly got less crowded.

Business cabling and point to point

Business network cabling solutions are the same craft at a different scale: cabling to every desk, a patch field that can be read, and a switch somewhere sensible rather than balanced on a shelf. If phones are going onto that network, voice is far less forgiving of a congested or poorly built network than email is, so the cabling stops being a background detail.

When the far end is a separate building rather than a separate room, point to point wireless links the two without trenching between them.
